Newport News Barge Camel

Barge camels serve as a stable platform for the berthing and handling of large vessels such as barges and ships. These structures, typically made of robust materials like steel or fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP), are strategically positioned alongside piers or docks. By creating a buffer between the vessel and the pier, barge camels help mitigate potential impacts, reduce wear and tear on both the vessel and the pier, and prevent excessive movement that could lead to damage or accidents. In essence, barge camels enhance operational efficiency, safety, and the overall longevity of maritime infrastructure so it is important to keep these camels functional without regular need for maintenance.

Axcess Infrastructure worked with the Creative Composites Group and Moffatt & Nichol to design a fiberglass barge camel for the Newport News Shipyard in Newport, VA.  These barge camels were designed to berth a 400’ x 100’ ocean transport barge and maintain a 30’ offset from the pier.  Axcess completed the detailed design for the Creative Composites Group who produced the camel.  FRP materials offer tremendous advantages for this application as this camel will not require any maintenance over its lifespan unlike its steel counterpart which would need scheduled maintenance and repair.
